Taskmaster VR - Garden

The garden acts as a pathway for users to navigate different areas of the environment, from the caravan and telephone box to the shed. Hedges and bushes were challenging due to the stylization and the need for recognizable, space-filling foliage. Finally, we struck a good balance with a combination of layering and patterns. I am particularly proud of the shed and netting, which are iconic objects from the series. With the feedback from my team, I feel we captured their resemblance spot on.

Over the past two years, I have created an estimated 400+ assets for Taskmaster VR, showcasing a diverse array of environments that capture the essence of the Taskmaster TV show. Here is a detailed breakdown of the art and my contributions to the environment.

We modelled, UV-mapped, and textured all assets using a custom Unity shader, with Substance Painter, Maya, and Photoshop playing crucial roles in the creation process. Substance Painter was the primary tool for all baking tasks, including Ambient Occlusion (AO) and Curvature maps.

To ensure consistency and efficiency, we chose the colours of the assets using a 32x64 palette. This approach facilitated easy colour adjustment and optimal texture mapping across the extensive asset library. We often combined multiple objects into singular UV maps to maintain performance when many objects were in view, minimizing the number of materials and draw calls.

Combining assets with different characteristics into single UV maps presented challenges, particularly with patterns. To overcome this, patterns were baked into the AO map, freeing the original pattern slot for another asset within the same UV map. This technique allowed for multiple patterns or decals to coexist in a bundled asset pack, maintaining visual variety without compromising performance.

This project was a massive team effort, made possible by the amazing people at Draw & Code/Scallywag Arcade. Collaborating with such talented individuals has been an invaluable experience, and I have learned so much along the way.

Special shout out to all the feedback and support from my team and the Head of 3D.
